Hello Warriors,

I really want to congratulate you all for your victories so far.

Everyday, you wake up with one purpose, which is -To fight to see the next day!

Yes to you! I am happy you’re alive Warrior.

Warrior, keep fighting, keep the faith, keep living.

I love you all,Warriors.

God keep you.

I hope you know there’s a cure for Sickle Cell Disease? It is called Bone Marrow Transplant. This has been successfully done for many patients. Consider it.

What is Sickle Cell (SCD)?

Sickle cell disorders are a group of illnesses which affect your red blood cells. Sickle cell is a genetic condition, which means it is passed on from your parents and you are born with it; you cannot catch it from other people.

Sickle cell disorders causes your normally round and flexible blood cells to become stiff and sickle shaped, stopping the blood cells, and the oxygen they carry, from being able to move freely around the body and causing pain. This can cause  episodes of severe pain. These painful episodes are referred to as sickle cell crisis. They are treated with strong painkillers such as morphine to control the pain.

People with sickle cell are also at risk of complications stroke, acute chest syndrome, blindness, bone damage and priapism (a persistent, painful erection of the penis).

Over time people with sickle cell can experience damage to organs such as the liver, kidney, lungs, heart and spleen. Death can also result from complications of the disorder.

Treatment of sickle cell mostly focuses on preventing and treating complications.

Symptoms of Sickle Cell

Chronic (long term) anaemia – when there are not enough red blood cells or Hb in your body.

Unpredictable Pain (crisis) – When the blood vessels get blocked, it can cause pain and swelling in the area, also known as a crisis.

You may get tired easily or experience fatigue – constant tiredness, feeling weak or lacking in energy because of the anaemia.

Jaundice – yellowing of the whites of the eyes and skin.

How Are Sickle Cell Disease Offsprings Produced?

AS(Man) + AS(Woman)

AA + AS + AS + SS

There is a 25% percent chance in every pregnancy of giving birth to a child with SS genotype.

This means that for everytime you as an ( AS/SS Genotype woman ) get pregnant ,the foetus may likely have the SS genotype.

This is the reason a union between AS or SS(man) and AS or SS(woman) is discouraged.

How Do You Help Prevent The Further Increasing Population of Sickle Cell Disease Offsprings.

Once you know that your relationship with him or her will lead to marriage, then you must seek to know and be sure of your genotypes before forging ahead.

And if you discover that you both are sickle cell Trait carriers(AS and AS) ,there is urgent need to cut off the marriage plans before falling head over  heels for him/her.

Although recent technologies have shown that there can be pre-natal genetic determination of fetal genotypes while yet in the womb, not everyone may be able to afford this, and you cannot keep subjecting yourself to aborting your pregnancies when you’re not really sure when next you’ll get pregnant again.

Ensure not to be the tool/instrument by which innocent children will come to earth and suffer while you enjoy your love.

In summary,

-Always go for genetic counseling and testing before tying the knot with your partner

-Avoid making children with a man/woman who has AS genotype as you, because you never can be so sure if all babies will come with the SS genotype.

-You can marry the love of your life even though you both have the AS traits, but you must make provisions to adopt children if you need them.

Thank you.
