*Nutritional support is the provision of more nutrients than that provided by normal dietary intake

*Oral supplementation, enteral feeding, and parenteral nutrition are methods of providing nutritional support 

 

*Patients who are malnourished or are at risk of malnourishment, should receive nutritional support.
*A patient is considered malnourished: 
if his/her, he/she: 
# *BMI < than 18.5 kg/m²* 

# *Has lost more than 10% unintentional weight in 3-6 months*

*BMI < than 20 kg/m² and has lost 5% of his or her weight in 3-6 months*

# *Patients starved for five days*

# *Patients unlikely to eat in a period of five days or more*
# *Patients with malabsorption disorders, nutrient losses, and increased nutrient requirements*
