Ever wondered why it not advisable to give water to accident victims?

Water is a diluent , when there is blood loss, the body looses some electrolytes such as sodium, Chloride, potassium and calcium. Giving ordinary water decreases the osmolarity of the body fluid by further diluting the electrolytes . At this stage, water permeates the intracellular compartment and causes Lysis of Red blood cells. The person suffers more blood loss due to red blood cells lysis. Anaemia becomes the resultant effect and death becomes inevitable if proper care is not taken.

Secondly, the patient may aspirate the fluid into the respiratory system which is dangerous too.
